Arun Kumar Chanda was a prominent freedom fighter, social reformer, and educationist from Silchar, Assam. He played a vital role in India’s National Movement by mobilizing people and encouraging their active participation in the struggle for independence.
Contributions to Education and Social Reform
He made significant contributions to education by founding Guru Charan College in 1935, where he served as Honorary Principal. Chanda worked tirelessly to uplift weaker sections of society and improve their social status through reformative efforts.
Role in Trade Union Movement
Chanda was deeply involved in trade union activities, providing leadership to the Postal and Railway Mail Service Union at both district and national levels. He also became the first President of the Provincial Trade Union Congress.
Political Career and Literary Work
He was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly in 1937 and later to the Indian Legislative Assembly in 1945. An accomplished writer, he shaped public opinion through the Bengali weekly Saptak.
