Shri Arvind N. Mafatlal, born on October 27, 1923, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, was a luminary in the realm of business and social reform. Educated at prestigious institutions like St. Xavier’s High School and Sydenham College, Mumbai, he inherited a rich business legacy established by his grandfather, Shri Mafatlal Gagalbhai, in 1905.

Taking the helm of the Mafatlal Group of Companies in 1955, Shri Arvind Mafatlal propelled its growth through bold innovation and strategic acumen. Notably, between 1963 and 1968, he pioneered India’s first integrated petrochemical complex through joint ventures with international giants like Royal Dutch Shell Co. and Hoechst AG.

Beyond business, Shri Arvind Mafatlal dedicated himself to social causes. As Chairman of the Shri Sadguru Seva Sangh Trust, he focused on providing essential health services in rural areas and played a pivotal role in relief efforts during natural disasters. His ‘Sukhadi Programme’ alleviated hunger during droughts and famines, saving countless lives.

Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s vision for rural development, Shri Arvind Mafatlal contributed significantly to the Bharatiya Agro Industries Foundation (BAIF), serving as its Chairman from 1977 until his passing in 2011. Under his leadership, BAIF executed exemplary projects in community development, sustainable rural development, and food security.

Shri Arvind Mafatlal’s contributions extended beyond business and social welfare. He held prominent positions in financial institutions, received numerous prestigious awards, and was a staunch advocate for women’s empowerment.

On October 30th, 2011, Shri Arvind N. Mafatlal left behind a legacy of entrepreneurship, industrial development, and social reform. His foresight, vision, and dedication continue to inspire generations, and the Commemorative Postage Stamp on his 100th Birth Anniversary pays tribute to his enduring legacy.
