Origins and Early History
Medical education in Northeast India began with the establishment of the Berry White School of Medicine in Dibrugarh in 1900. Founded through the generosity of Dr. John Berry White, a philanthropist who donated his life savings of ₹50,000, the school initially trained Licentiate Medical Practitioners (LMPs) before India’s independence.
This early institution laid the foundation for the demand for a full-fledged medical college in Assam. With public support and strong leadership, the movement culminated in the creation of Assam Medical College after independence.Establishment of Assam Medical College
