The Timeless Weave of the Silk City

A Heritage of Elegance and Excellence

Known as the “Silk City of India,” Bhagalpur in Bihar has been synonymous with fine silk weaving for centuries. Nestled on the southern bank of the River Ganga, Bhagalpur is a historic town that has long been the heart of India’s handloom silk industry. The region’s weavers, with their remarkable craftsmanship and deep-rooted traditions, have elevated Bhagalpur Silk to global acclaim.

Each piece of Bhagalpur silk narrates a tale of artistry and heritage—of looms that have sung the same rhythmic melodies for generations.

The Craft of Bhagalpur Silk Weaving

Bhagalpur’s silk weaving tradition is defined by skillful handloom techniques and the use of diverse silk varieties such as Mulberry, Tussar, and Eri. Among these, Tasar silk holds a place of pride. The silk yarns—Reeled Tasar, Katiya, Gichha, and Balkal—are developed from cocoons reared in the region’s forests, while Mulberry silk is spun into yarns like Dupion, Noil, Matka, and Spun Silk.

Weavers then transform these yarns into stunning fabrics and sarees, characterized by their natural texture, durability, and soft sheen. The result is a luxurious drape that perfectly balances traditional elegance with modern sophistication.

Bhagalpur Silk: A Global Identity

The beauty of Bhagalpur Silk lies in its subtle charm and sustainable craftsmanship. From exquisite sarees to contemporary fashion fabrics, Bhagalpur’s weaves have found admirers across the world. The silk’s distinctive raw texture and natural dyes make it a preferred choice for those who value authenticity and eco-friendly fashion.

Recognized for Its Geographical Heritage

In recognition of its historical and cultural significance, Bhagalpur Silk received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag—a mark of authenticity and quality that protects the weavers’ legacy and ensures that only genuine silk from Bhagalpur carries its name.

To honor this rich weaving heritage, the Department of Posts released a commemorative postage stamp as part of the series on GI Registered Handloom Products, celebrating the artisans whose work continues to define India’s silk story.

A Weave Beyond Time

The story of Bhagalpur Silk is not just about fabric—it is about faith, family, and the flow of tradition through time. Every thread carries the essence of a community that has woven its dreams into silk, making Bhagalpur not just a place on the map, but a living legend of India’s textile artistry.
