Mystic Saint of Kashmir and Spiritual Guide

Bhagawan Gopinathji was one of the most revered spiritual figures of modern India. Known for his deep spiritual realization and compassionate guidance, he played a significant role in inspiring both spiritual seekers and householders.

Early Life and Background

Bhagawan Gopinathji was born on 3rd July 1898 in Srinagar, into a middle-class Kashmiri Pandit family. He inherited strong spiritual values from his deeply religious parents.

Although his formal education was limited to the middle level, he possessed a natural inclination toward spirituality and absorbed knowledge deeply. Due to financial challenges, he began working at a young age, first in a printing press and later running a small grocery shop. However, even during this time, he remained deeply immersed in meditation and spiritual contemplation.

Spiritual Journey and Discipline

From an early age, Bhagawan Gopinathji showed a strong desire to meet and learn from great saints. He believed that overcoming worldly desires—especially lust—was essential for achieving self-realization.

His spiritual practices evolved over time:

  • He began with Panchaanga-upaasanaa, worshipping five deities—Ganesha, Surya, Narayana, Shiva, and Shakti
  • Later, he shifted to Nirguna upaasanaa, focusing on the formless supreme reality

In his early thirties, he undertook intense saadhanaa (spiritual discipline), isolating himself for deep meditation.

Years of Intense Meditation

Bhagawan Gopinathji’s spiritual practice was marked by extraordinary austerity:

  • He remained absorbed in meditation for long periods
  • Sometimes went without food for months
  • Endured extreme physical hardship during his seven-year spiritual discipline

Despite these challenges, he attained profound spiritual realization. After this transformative phase, he dedicated his life to spreading spiritual wisdom and guiding others on the path of self-realization.

Teachings and Legacy

Bhagawan Gopinathji emphasized:

  • Detachment from material desires
  • Inner discipline and meditation
  • Realization of the supreme reality

Though detached from worldly life, he remained deeply concerned about the well-being of people and society. His teachings left a lasting impact on his followers.

Final Years and Ashram

Bhagawan Gopinathji passed away on 28th May 1968. His legacy continues through his disciples and devotees, who established an ashram in Kharyar, Srinagar, in his memory.

Kashmir has long been a land of saints and sages, and Bhagawan Gopinathji stands out as one of the most influential spiritual figures of the 20th century.

Commemorative Recognition

To honor his contributions, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp on the occasion of his birth centenary. This tribute recognizes his spiritual legacy and enduring influence.

Conclusion

Bhagawan Gopinathji remains a symbol of spiritual strength, discipline, and enlightenment. His life journey—from humble beginnings to profound realization—continues to inspire seekers on the path of truth and self-discovery.
