Growth of Tourism After Independence
In the fifty years since India’s Independence, tourism emerged as a major socio-economic and cultural sector. It flourished steadily while generating valuable foreign exchange for the country. Tourism became an important contributor to national development and cultural exchange.
Importance of Tourism
Tourism plays a significant role in preserving India’s traditional vocations, handicrafts, arts, heritage sites, and monuments. It also helps reduce migration from backward and rural areas to cities by creating local employment opportunities. In addition, tourism has contributed to the advancement and empowerment of women.
Domestic and international tourism together promote harmony, friendship, and national integration among people from diverse regions and cultures.
India as a Tourist Destination
India offers an extraordinary variety of attractions for travelers, including:
- Snow-clad mountains
- Deep blue seas and beaches
- Deserts and sand dunes
- Vast plains with flowing rivers
- Temple monuments and historic sites
- Colorful fairs and festivals
- Skiing, river rafting, and trekking
- Luxury hotels and heritage destinations
India truly stands out as one nation with countless destinations.
Bharat Paryatan Diwas
During the Golden Jubilee year of Independence, it was considered especially fitting to celebrate Bharat Paryatan Diwas (India Tourism Day) on 25 January.
This date is significant because on 25 January 1966, tourism was officially recognized as a separate subject by the Government of India.
Commemoration
The Department of Posts was pleased to issue a special commemorative postage stamp on 25 January 1998 to mark Bharat Paryatan Diwas.
