Introduction to the Bible Society of India
Bible Society of India (BSI) is an authorized body dedicated to translating, producing, distributing, and marketing the Holy Bible across India. Its Central Office is located in Bengaluru, supported by a network of fifteen auxiliary offices nationwide, a promotional centre in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and a translation centre in Shillong.
Historical Background
The Bible Society movement in India began in 1811 in Kolkata with the mission of serving the Church, society, and affiliated organizations. Over the years, the Society has worked with a clear vision—to make the Holy Bible accessible to all people in India.
For more than two centuries, the Bible Society of India has faithfully served Indian churches and diverse ethno-linguistic communities across the country.
Translation and Literacy Initiatives
Translation of the Bible remains a priority for the BSI. Its translation work has significantly contributed to literacy development in India. The Society conducts awareness and literacy programmes in partnership with affiliated organizations, helping non-literate individuals learn languages.
The BSI has translated the Holy Bible into 203 Indian languages and is currently engaged in translating it into another 102 languages and dialects. Globally, the Bible is available in approximately 1000 languages.
Organizational Structure and Global Affiliation
The Bible Society of India is a national, autonomous, and independent body. It is a founding member of the United Bible Societies (UBS), a world fellowship of Bible societies incorporated in 1946. Bible societies are interdenominational and are not affiliated with any single Christian denomination.
Social Outreach and Community Service
BSI develops products and services tailored to local needs. These initiatives include literacy development programmes, audio products for the visually challenged, and support resources for people living with HIV/AIDS.
The Society collaborates with various Christian NGOs to design special programmes for marginalized communities, including women facing domestic violence, children without parental care, and prison inmates.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
In recognition of its remarkable service spanning over 200 years in promoting literacy, faith, and social upliftment across India, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp on the Bible Society of India, honouring its enduring contribution to the nation.
