The historic origins of the Cathedral and John Connon School date back to 1860, when Bishop Harding and the Cathedral Chaplain founded a Grammar School in Bombay. This initiative was soon followed by the establishment of a Girls’ School and a Choir School, laying the foundation for one of Mumbai’s most prestigious educational institutions.
Formation of the Education Society
In 1866, the Bombay Scottish Education Society was formed. The Society constructed an impressive school building and named it after its generous donor, Mr. John Connon, who was then the Chief Registrar of Bombay.
In 1922, at the suggestion of the Principal of Cathedral School, it was decided that the Cathedral Schools and the Scottish School would function together under the Anglo-Scottish Education Society. The institutions were reorganized into three units: the Cathedral Boys’ School, the Cathedral Girls’ School, and the John Connon School.
Today, the school comprises five sections — Pre-Primary, Infant, Junior, Middle, and Senior Schools — and also operates a residential branch.
Academic Excellence and Holistic Education
The school maintains high academic standards, where achievement is earned through sustained hard work. It is affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), and students appear for the ISC (Class 12) and ICSE (Class 10) examinations conducted by the Council.
Its motto, “Clarum Efficunt Studia” — meaning “Studies maketh famous” — reflects its enduring commitment to academic distinction. For over 150 years, the institution has imparted quality education while nurturing intellectual curiosity and character.
Special attention is given to students with learning difficulties. Cultural activities such as debates, fine arts, and sports are actively encouraged. The school fosters self-reliance, a spirit of adventure, and a strong sense of community service through diverse programmes.
Leadership and Social Responsibility
One of the school’s notable initiatives is the Cathedral Model United Nations, which simulates the functioning of the United Nations. Students debate issues of international importance, developing confidence, articulation, and global awareness.
The school also runs a non-profit organisation named ‘Yuva Pratisthan’, dedicated to assisting the needy across various sections of society. Expanding its outreach, the organisation works closely with LTMG Hospital, Sion, contributing to community welfare.
Two teachers from the institution have received the National Award for Best Teacher from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, underscoring the school’s commitment to educational excellence.
A Legacy of Distinction
The Cathedral & John Connon School boasts a distinguished list of alumni, including captains of industry, scientists, social activists, doctors, lawyers, actors, and writers of great repute.
Like all great institutions, Cathedral continues to evolve — blending the strengths of its rich heritage with the demands of the modern world. In recognition of its remarkable legacy and contribution to education, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp honouring Cathedral & John Connon School, Mumbai.
