India Oman Friendship Stamp

India and Oman share a deep-rooted connection forged through geography, history, and culture, enjoying warm and cordial relations for centuries. People-to-people contact between the two nations can be traced back over 5,000 years, while formal diplomatic relations were established in 1955. These ties were further strengthened in 2008 when their relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership, paving the way for enhanced political and economic cooperation.

A symbol of this enduring friendship, India extended a special invitation to the Sultanate of Oman as a guest country during India’s G-20 Presidency. This honor reflects the time-tested relationship and opens new avenues for collaboration between the two nations.

The Commemorative India Oman Friendship Stamp

To celebrate the historical friendship and cultural ties, India Post and Oman Post jointly issued the India Oman Friendship Stamp. This unique philatelic tribute was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on March 21, 2022, between the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, Government of India, and Oman Post.

The chosen theme for this joint issue highlights the traditional dance forms of India and Oman, capturing the cultural essence of both countries. The beautifully crafted artwork was created by Mrs. Soni Budhia, an Indian artist residing in Oman for over 12 years. Her design showcases a harmonious blend of cultural pride and architectural heritage:

  • The Indian side features the iconic Hawa Mahal from Jaipur, symbolizing India’s architectural grandeur.
  • The Omani side is adorned with the majestic Fort Nizwa, one of Oman’s most renowned landmarks.

Traditional Dance Forms Depicted on the Stamp

Dandiya Raas – A Celebration of Rhythm and Tradition (India)

Originating from the vibrant state of Gujarat, Dandiya Raas is a colorful folk dance performed during the Navaratri festival. Young performers move rhythmically in a circle, skillfully clashing decorated sticks called dandiya in time with the beat of the dhol and shehnai instruments. The dance symbolizes joy, festivity, and community spirit, making it one of India’s most cherished cultural expressions.

Al Razha – Omani Folk Heritage in Motion (Oman)

On the Omani side, the stamp depicts Al Razha, a traditional folk art integral to Oman’s cultural heritage. This ancient choreographed performance involves two fighters, known as Zavenin, engaging in a mock duel using swords and shields. Accompanied by poetic recitations, the performance was historically used as a call to arms or a celebration of victory, now serving as a display of national pride during festivities.
Al Razha comes in several styles, such as Himbel, Qusafi, and Lal Al Oud, varying in tempo, rhythm, and poetic themes.

A Milestone in Philatelic and Diplomatic History

The launch of the India Oman Friendship Stamp marks a significant milestone in the long-standing relationship between India and Oman. This commemorative issue is a valuable collectible for philatelists and art enthusiasts alike, symbolizing the warmth, goodwill, and shared heritage of both nations.

Through this joint stamp, the Department of Posts not only celebrates cultural diversity but also reinforces the spirit of international friendship, making it a proud addition to the world of philately.
