A Century of Excellence
The University of Delhi Centenary Stamp was issued by the Department of Posts to honor one of India’s most prestigious institutions of higher education as it completed 100 glorious years since its establishment in 1922. This commemorative stamp not only marks the centenary of Delhi University but also celebrates its remarkable contribution to education, research, and nation-building.
A Legacy of a Century
Founded through an Act of the Central Legislative Assembly, the University of Delhi began its journey with just three colleges and 750 students. Over the years, it has transformed into one of India’s largest and most respected universities, with 16 faculties, 80 academic departments, more than 80 colleges, and nearly 800,000 students. Today, it attracts learners from across India and abroad, including nearly 2,000 international students from 75 countries.
From its very first Vice-Chancellor, Sir Hari Singh Gaur, to the present leadership under Prof. Yogesh Singh, the university has nurtured leaders, lawmakers, writers, scientists, CEOs, artists, and cultural icons. Many of its alumni have received Padma Awards and held the highest offices in India and abroad, highlighting its enduring influence.
Symbol of Excellence and Values
Guided by its motto “Nishtha Dhriti Satyam” (Dedication, Steadfastness, and Truth), Delhi University has upheld the highest standards in education and research. Its ranking among the top institutions in the world and consistent presence in the QS BRICS University Rankings reflect its academic excellence.
With an impressive central library system housing over 6.6 million books, modern fibre-optic connectivity across campuses, hostels including international facilities, and advanced health centers, the university provides a vibrant learning environment. The South Campus, established in 1973 and expanded in 1982, further strengthened its reach and infrastructure.
A Role Model in Higher Education
The University of Delhi has always stood as a role model for other institutions with its blend of teaching, research, and social outreach. It continues to foster innovation, inclusivity, and cultural exchange, embodying the Indian ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family.
The Centenary Commemorative Stamp
The issuance of the University of Delhi Centenary Stamp is a tribute to this institution’s century-long journey of academic brilliance and societal contribution. More than just a postal issue, the stamp symbolizes the spirit of excellence, resilience, and service to humanity that Delhi University has stood for since its inception.
