After India gained independence, Devi Lal played a significant role in the politics of Punjab, serving as a member of the Legislative Assembly several times. Following the formation of Haryana, he focused his efforts on developing the new state.
He served twice as the Chief Minister of Haryana, during which the state witnessed significant progress, particularly in the agricultural sector. His policies greatly benefited farmers and contributed to rural development.
Rise in National Politics
In the late 1980s, Chaudhary Devi Lal emerged as a major figure in national politics. He served twice as the Deputy Prime Minister of India.
Popularly known as “Tau” (elder uncle) among the masses and often called a “Kingmaker” by the media, his strength lay in his deep connection with rural communities across North India. Even in his later years, he actively traveled through villages, listening to people’s concerns and advocating for their rights.
