Children’s Day in India

Children’s Day is celebrated every year on 14 November to commemorate the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. Pandit Nehru had a deep affection for children, who lovingly called him “Chacha Nehru.” He firmly believed that children are the future citizens of the nation and emphasized the importance of instilling in them the right values, cultural understanding, and love for the country from an early age.

Significance of Child Welfare

Highlighting the universal concern for children’s well-being, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Report at the World Summit of Children (2001) aptly stated:
“We were all children once and we all share the desire for the well-being of our children, which has always been and will continue to be the most universally cherished aspiration of humankind.”

This philosophy resonates strongly with the spirit of Children’s Day celebrations in India.

Children’s Day and Philately

To mark this important occasion in the national calendar, the Department of Posts issues a special commemorative postage stamp every year. A unique feature of this initiative is that the stamp design is selected from artworks created by children themselves, through a nationwide Stamp Design Competition organized annually.

Theme for 2012 – “Post Office 2050”

The theme of the 2012 Children’s Day Stamp Design Competition was “Post Office 2050.” Children across the country expressed their imagination and creativity by visualizing the future of postal services. Their designs depicted innovative and inspirational ideas, ranging from robot-manned post offices to delivering letters to the moon, showcasing futuristic thinking and boundless creativity.

Commemorative Postage Stamp

In celebration of children’s creativity and imagination, the Department of Posts issued a Commemorative Postage Stamp on National Children’s Day 2012, featuring the theme “Post Office 2050.” The stamp stands as a tribute to the dreams, innovation, and vision of India’s young minds.
