Since 1957, the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department has been issuing special stamps in honor of Children’s Day, observed annually on November 14th. These stamps have featured various themes related to the well-being and care of children.
Children’s Day holds a special significance in India as it coincides with the birth anniversary of the late Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who passed away. Pandit Nehru was widely known for his love for children and his concern for their welfare. He had a special fondness for spending time with children, and his efforts contributed significantly to the advancement of child welfare in the country.
Pandit Nehru was affectionately referred to as “Chacha Nehru” (Uncle Nehru) by children across India, reflecting the deep bond he shared with them. Though he is no longer with us, his memory continues to inspire and resonate with children and people of all ages.
In a fitting tribute to Pandit Nehru’s legacy and in commemoration of Children’s Day, the special stamp issued in 1964 also marks the seventy-fifth birth anniversary of the late Prime Minister. The design of the stamp is adapted from a commemorative coin with a denomination of one rupee, which is set to be released on November 14th, 1964. The stamp features the inscription ‘Chacha Nehru’ at the top and ‘Bal Din’ (Children’s Day) at the bottom, symbolizing the enduring legacy of Pandit Nehru’s love for children and his contributions to their well-being.
