Cities of India

India, an ancient civilization, has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous kingdoms and cities. Many of its historic cities, though hundreds of years old, continue to thrive today. To highlight this rich legacy, the Department of Posts proposes to issue special stamps on historic cities of India periodically. The first set features special stamps on Bikaner, Cuttack, and Hyderabad.

Bikaner

Bikaner, founded in 1488 by Rao Bika, son of Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, is a city that has endured the vicissitudes of five centuries of turbulent history. A century after its founding, Raja Rai Singh built the Junagarh Fort, which stands as a testament to the city’s enduring legacy. Despite being situated in the heart of the great Thar Desert with its oppressive and hostile climate, Bikaner has flourished in arts, crafts, and culture. The city is home to the world-renowned Anup Sanskrit Library.

Maharaja Ganga Singh, who modernized Bikaner by building numerous public utilities and the Lalgarh Palace, also constructed the longest brick-lined canal in 1927. With its rich cultural heritage, Bikaner has become one of the foremost tourist spots in Rajasthan.

Cuttack

Cuttack, located in the state of Odisha, is a city with a history that dates back over a thousand years. It was established in the 10th century by King Anangabhima Deva III. Known as the “Millennium City” and the “Silver City” due to its historical significance and silver filigree works, Cuttack has been the former capital of Odisha. The Barabati Fort, built in the 14th century, is a prominent landmark, reflecting the city’s ancient glory. Cuttack is also famous for its Durga Puja celebrations and its unique Chandi Medha (silver tableau).

Hyderabad

Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, was founded in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. Known for its rich history, culture, and architecture, Hyderabad was the center of the Golconda Sultanate. The city is famous for its iconic Charminar, a monument and mosque built in 1591, which stands as a symbol of Hyderabad. The city’s rich cultural heritage is also reflected in its cuisine, language, and lifestyle. Hyderabad is renowned for its biryani, pearls, and IT industry, making it a vibrant blend of the old and new.
