Eminent Tamil Poet and Scholar
S. Desigavinayagam Pillai occupies a distinguished place in the history of twentieth-century Tamil literature. Celebrated for the simplicity, elegance, and moral depth of his poetry, he made significant contributions to Tamil literary culture and education.
Early Life and Education
Kavimani S. Desigavinayagam Pillai was born on 27 July 1876 at Theroor in the princely state of Travancore, now part of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. He was born to Sivathanupillai and Adilakshmi. He received his early schooling in Theroor and later pursued higher education in Nagercoil.
He began his professional career as a school teacher and taught at institutions in Kottar and Trivandrum. Later, he joined Maharaja’s College in Trivandrum as a lecturer in Tamil, where he contributed significantly to the development of Tamil studies.
Literary Contributions
Desigavinayagam Pillai composed his first Tamil poem at the age of nineteen. Over the years, he wrote numerous poems, including several songs for children that were later published in the collection Malarum Malayum (Flower and Garland) in 1938.
Among his most notable works are:
- Asiya Jothi (Light of Asia)
- Nanjil Nattu Marumakkal Vazhi Manmiyam, a satirical work on social customs
- Tamil translation of the poems of Omar Khayyam
His poems are known for their noble themes, simplicity of language, and emotional appeal. Even today, many of his works are included in school and college curricula.
Scholar and Researcher
Apart from being a poet, Desigavinayagam Pillai was also an accomplished epigraphist. He conducted extensive studies of ancient stone inscriptions found in and around Kanyakumari and Nagercoil. His research work titled Kandalur Salai gained widespread recognition and was later reprinted in 1953.
He was also proficient in Malayalam and English and translated works from English into Tamil, enriching the Tamil literary tradition.
Recognition and Title of “Kavimani”
In 1940, the Tamil Sangam honored him with the prestigious title “Kavimani”, meaning “Gem among Poets,” during its seventh annual conference held in Madras.
Despite receiving several prestigious offers later in life—including the post of Laureate and an honorary professorship—he humbly declined them, demonstrating his commitment to simplicity and selfless service.
Ideals and Social Service
Kavimani was a devoted follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Inspired by Gandhian ideals, he adopted a lifestyle based on simple living and high thinking. He always wore khadi, spun the charkha, and remained deeply concerned about the upliftment of the downtrodden.
He also played a key role in the establishment of South Travancore Hindu College, reflecting his dedication to education and social development.
Even after retiring from service in 1931, he continued contributing to academia as a member of the Travancore State Textbook Committee and as a consultant for the Tamil Lexicon prepared by the University of Madras.
