Poet of the People and Voice of Folk Tradition
Dula Bhaya Kag was a renowned poet, nationalist, composer, and singer whose work enriched the folk literary traditions of Saurashtra. Living a simple life in his native village, he created a remarkable body of poetry and songs that reflected devotion, patriotism, and social reform. Through his powerful verses and performances, he became one of the most beloved folk poets of Gujarat.
Early Life
Dula Bhaya Kag was born on 25 November 1903 to Bhaya Kag and Dhanbai. Raised in a rural environment, he had limited access to formal education and could study only up to Class Five. Much of his childhood was spent tending the cattle belonging to his family.
However, the quiet hours spent grazing cattle became a time of creativity and reflection. During these moments, he developed his passion for poetry, which would later blossom into a significant contribution to Gujarati folk literature.
Inspiration and Nationalist Spirit
Dula Bhaya Kag’s poetry was deeply influenced by the freedom movement and by the teachings of great leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave. Inspired by their ideals, his writings expressed both devotion to God and love for the nation.
Demonstrating his commitment to social change, he donated his land to the Bhoodan Movement led by Vinoba Bhave. He also actively supported prohibition campaigns after the formation of the Saurashtra State.
Contribution to Education and Society
Apart from his literary achievements, Dula Bhaya Kag worked for the upliftment of society, particularly the Charan community. Along with Ratubhai Adani, he established a Pathshala (school) for Folk Literature in Junagadh.
He also played a key role in founding the Charan Boarding House in Bhavnagar and served as the President of the Charan Hitvardhak Sabha, working to improve educational opportunities and social conditions for the community.
Literary Contributions
Dula Bhaya Kag’s poetic talent and powerful recitations earned him widespread admiration. Listening to the recitals of “Kavi Kag”, as he was affectionately called, was considered a memorable experience by audiences.
His most celebrated work is Kagvani, published in eight volumes. These collections include:
- Couplets and devotional songs
- Narratives from the Ramayana and Mahabharata
- Songs inspired by Gandhian philosophy
- Poems related to the Bhoodan Movement
Many of his compositions were written in traditional folk forms such as Garba and Raas, making them popular among the people.
His other works include Bhudanmala, Vinoba Bavani, and Shamaldas Bavani. Several of his poems and songs were also recorded by All India Radio, further spreading his literary influence.
Recognition and Legacy
In recognition of his immense contribution to literature and society, the Government of India honoured Dula Bhaya Kag with the Padma Shri in 1962.
He passed away on 22 February 1977, leaving behind a rich legacy of poetry, music, and social service that continues to inspire generations.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
To celebrate his literary and cultural contributions, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp in honour of Dula Bhaya Kag. The stamp pays tribute to a poet whose songs carried the spirit of devotion, patriotism, and folk tradition across Gujarat and beyond.
