Social Reformer and Champion of Self-Respect
E. V. Ramasami, popularly known as E.V.R. or Periyar, was born on September 17, 1879, at Erode in Tamil Nadu. Leaving school at the age of ten, he joined his father’s business early in life. However, his patriotic zeal and deep concern for social justice soon drew him into public life.
Inspired by the freedom struggle, Ramasami gave up his prosperous business to join the Indian National Congress. During this period, he became closely associated with C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) and actively participated in nationalist movements, courting imprisonment several times.
Vaikkom Satyagraha and Fight Against Caste Discrimination
One of the defining moments of his life was the Vaikkom Satyagraha in Kerala, where he protested against the unjust practice of barring certain castes from entering public streets near temples. His leadership and determination earned him the title “Vaikkom Hero.”
In 1925, disillusioned with certain policies, he left the Congress and intensified his campaign against caste discrimination, superstition, and social inequality. He became a relentless advocate for the rights of the oppressed and weaker sections of society.
Self-Respect Movement and Social Reform
In 1925, Periyar founded the Self-Respect Movement, a socio-political organization aimed at promoting equality, rationalism, and social justice. Through his publications “Kudiyarasu” (Republic) and “Viduthalai” (Freedom), he propagated progressive ideas including inter-caste marriages, widow remarriage, and the eradication of orthodoxy and blind superstition.
In 1938, he was elected President of the Justice Party. At the historic Salem Conference in 1944, along with C. N. Annadurai, he transformed the Justice Party into the Dravida Kazhagam, giving a new direction to the Dravidian movement and championing Tamil identity and social reform.
Personality and Legacy
Periyar was an ardent fighter, a revolutionary thinker, and a staunch rationalist. Despite his radical ideas, he led a simple and humane life. He continued his struggle against social injustice until his passing on December 24, 1973, at the age of 94.
His contributions left an indelible mark on Tamil society and modern Indian social thought.
Definitive Postage Stamp
To honour his immense contribution to social reform and rationalist thought, India Post issued a Definitive Postage Stamp featuring E.V. Ramasami. The stamp stands as a tribute to his lifelong dedication to equality, self-respect, and social justice.
Through this philatelic recognition, his legacy continues to inspire generations to uphold the principles of human dignity and social reform.
