A Unique Bird of the Nilgiri Hills
The Nilgiri Laughingthrush is a distinctive bird species endemic to the Nilgiri Hills in southern India. Known for its lively nature and characteristic call, this bird is named for its spirited, laughing-like sound, which it repeats frequently in its natural habitat.
The Nilgiri Laughingthrush primarily feeds on insects and berries, particularly wild raspberry and hill guava found in the forests of the Nilgiri region. Its diet and habitat preferences make it an important part of the mountain ecosystem.
Breeding typically takes place between February and July. During this period, the bird builds a cup-shaped nest made of grass, moss, and rootlets, usually placed in a bush or small tree. These nests provide shelter and protection for its young in the dense vegetation of the hills.
Philatelic Tribute
Like many other wildlife species, the Nilgiri Laughingthrush faces threats due to habitat loss and environmental changes. To highlight the importance of conserving endangered birds and their habitats, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp featuring this remarkable species as part of a series dedicated to endangered birds of India. The stamp celebrates the bird’s unique beauty while promoting awareness about the need for wildlife conservation.
