A Celebration of Culture, Commerce and Tradition
India has a rich and vibrant tradition of melas (fairs) that dates back centuries. These fairs serve as important centers of socio-economic and cultural activity, drawing thousands of people from across regions. Colourful, dynamic, and deeply rooted in local traditions, each fair reflects the unique history, spirituality, and community life of its region.
To highlight this extraordinary cultural diversity, India Post released a set of four commemorative postage stamps on “Fairs of India”, showcasing some of the country’s most iconic and historically significant melas.
Goa Carnival
One of India’s most famous celebrations, the Goa Carnival is a lively three-day festival of music, dance, and joyous celebration held every year in mid-February. Its origins trace back to the early years of Portuguese colonization in Goa.
The carnival begins with a grand procession led by King Momo on “Fat Saturday,” featuring vibrant floats, colorful costumes, and spirited performances. Tourists and locals alike participate enthusiastically in competitions, parades, and cultural programs, making it a major attraction in Goa’s cultural calendar.
Pushkar Fair
Held annually during the Hindu month of Kartika (October–November), the Pushkar Fair in Rajasthan is one of the largest cattle fairs in the world. Known especially for camel trading, the fair also includes horses, bulls, and other livestock.
Located near the sacred Pushkar Lake and the revered Brahma Temple, the fair beautifully blends commerce with devotion. Traders, sadhus, musicians, dancers, and tourists gather in large numbers. A holy dip in the lake during Kartika Purnima is considered highly auspicious, adding a strong spiritual dimension to the vibrant festivities.
Sonepur Cattle Fair
The Sonepur Fair, held in Bihar at the confluence of the Ganga and Gandak rivers, is regarded as one of Asia’s largest cattle fairs. Historically significant, it dates back to ancient times and is believed to have been a marketplace for elephants and horses during the reign of Chandragupta Maurya.
Apart from animal trading—including cattle, birds, and other livestock—the fair attracts thousands of devotees who take a holy dip at the river confluence and visit the famous Hariharnath Temple. Traditional entertainment such as folk performances, jugglers, and local markets further enrich the fair’s atmosphere.
Poush Mela and Jaydev Kenduli Mela
In West Bengal, the Baul festivals offer a unique spiritual and musical experience. The wandering Baul minstrels, known for their devotional songs and philosophy of universal love, gained wider recognition through the writings of Rabindranath Tagore.
Among the many Baul gatherings, the Poush Mela at Santiniketan has evolved into a major cultural and tourist event, while the Jaydev–Kenduli Mela retains its traditional essence as a meeting ground for Baul singers to share their spiritual music and oral traditions.
