The First Triennale Art Exhibition, New Delhi marks a significant milestone in the art scene of India. Until now, art lovers in India had limited exposure to contemporary international art exhibitions, such as those held in Venice or Paris. The Lalit Kala Akademi, recognizing this gap, took the initiative to organize Triennials of contemporary international art, a project supported by UNESCO.
Inaugurated on February 10, 1968, by the President of India, Dr. Zakir Husain, this first Triennale showcased carefully curated exhibits from both Indian and international artists. Works of art from 32 countries, spanning Western and Afro-Asian regions, were on display, encompassing various mediums such as graphics, paintings, and sculptures. An international jury of art critics and connoisseurs selected exhibits worthy of awards, distinguishing between the International and Indian sections.
Modern art, characterized by its spirit of experimentation and inquiry, reflects the challenges and uncertainties faced by humanity today. Indian art, an integral part of this global artistic landscape, shares common themes and concerns with artists worldwide. The First Triennale serves as a platform for the free exchange of ideas among artists from India and beyond, fostering greater understanding and appreciation of diverse artistic expressions.
For the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department, which often features artistic representations of Indian life and culture on postage stamps, the developments in Indian art are of particular interest. By issuing a special postage stamp to commemorate this significant exhibition of world art, the Department celebrates the cultural richness and artistic vibrancy showcased at the First Triennale in New Delhi.
