The centenary of scientific forestry in India is being celebrated on November 21, 1961. While initial steps were taken in some provinces in the 1840s and 1850s towards a scientific forest policy, it was in the 1860s that significant progress was made in forest policy, legislation, demarcation, and conservancy. Hence, the year 1861 has been chosen as the starting point of scientific forestry in India.
Today, with India’s growing economy and the demands of rapidly developing wood-based industries, the importance of further growth and development of scientific forestry in the country is more evident than ever before. Recognizing this, the Post & Telegraphs Department is pleased to participate in commemorating an event that highlights such a vital aspect of India’s development.
To mark this occasion, the department will issue a special 15-nP stamp on November 21, 1961. The stamp will depict a forest scene with the majestic Himalayas in the background, symbolizing the rich natural heritage and the significance of scientific forestry in India’s landscape and development.
