Commemorative Postage Stamp on Katarni Rice of Bihar

The Fragrant Grain of Bihar

Katarni Rice, renowned for its distinct aroma and exquisite taste, is one of the most treasured rice varieties of Bihar. Cultivated mainly in the Bhagalpur, Banka, and Munger districts, this slender-grained rice has been an integral part of the region’s culinary and cultural traditions for centuries.

Unique Features of Katarni Rice

Katarni is admired for its slender, aromatic grains that retain their fragrance even after cooking. Its specialty lies in the preparation of beaten rice (Chura), especially during festivals and traditional ceremonies, where it is considered a delicacy.

Cultivation and Agricultural Practices

Katarni is a tall rice variety (reaching 140–160 cm) and is photoperiod-sensitive, flowering in October and maturing by December. It thrives in fertile soils with traditional irrigation methods, requiring careful nurturing by farmers. With a yield of 25–30 t/ha, Katarni rice continues to be a vital source of livelihood in its growing regions.

GI Tag Recognition and Research Support

In 2018, Katarni Rice was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag No. 553, safeguarding its authenticity and reputation. Ongoing efforts by the Bihar Agricultural University have enhanced its yield potential and minimized issues such as lodging, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Cultural and Culinary Significance

More than just a crop, Katarni Rice is a symbol of Bihar’s rich heritage. Its flavor and aroma have earned it a special place in traditional kitchens, festive meals, and community gatherings, reflecting the cultural essence of the region.

A Stamp Celebrating Bihar’s Heritage

The Department of Posts proudly issues a commemorative postage stamp on Katarni Rice of Bihar, honoring this unique variety that beautifully combines agricultural excellence, cultural significance, and culinary delight.
