A Visionary Educationist and Industrial Pioneer
Shri G. Varadaraj was a distinguished educationist, industrialist, and parliamentarian whose contributions greatly influenced the fields of education, industry, and social welfare in India. Widely respected for his leadership and vision, he played a vital role in strengthening institutions and promoting economic development.
Early Life and Education
G. Varadaraj was born on 1 November 1936 in Coimbatore to Shri Ganga Naidu. He completed his schooling at Sarva Jana High School in Peelamedu and pursued his intermediate studies at the Government Arts College, Coimbatore.
As a member of the renowned PSG (Periaveedu Sama Naidu Govindaswamy Naidu) family, he carried forward a strong legacy of service in education and industry. His leadership and entrepreneurial spirit helped expand the activities of the PSG group in various sectors.
Contributions to Education
Varadaraj played a key role in nurturing and expanding several prominent institutions under the PSG group. His support strengthened educational establishments such as:
- Sarva Jana Higher Secondary School
- PSG College of Arts and Science
- PSG Industrial Institute
- PSG College of Technology
- PSG Medical College
Serving as the Managing Trustee of the PSG group of institutions from 1978 to 1990, he established the Institute of Medical Science and Research in 1985, further enhancing opportunities for medical education and healthcare development.
Role in Industry and Economic Development
In 1987, Varadaraj founded Rajshree Sugars and Chemicals Limited in the backward Theni district of Tamil Nadu. The establishment of this industry significantly contributed to the economic and social progress of the region by generating employment and encouraging industrial growth.
He was also a Patron Member of the Coimbatore District Small Scale Industries Association, where he strongly advocated the development and preservation of small-scale industries in Coimbatore, an important industrial hub.
Social Service and Community Initiatives
Popularly known as “GV”, Varadaraj was actively involved in community service. Through the Rotary movement, he helped initiate measles immunization and polio vaccination programmes in the early 1980s across Rotary District 320, covering rural areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
He also supported youth development activities and was associated with the Bharat Scouts and Guides, promoting discipline, leadership, and community service among young people.
Parliamentary Career
G. Varadaraj served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha for six years beginning in 1983. During his tenure, he contributed actively to several parliamentary committees and national discussions.
One of his notable efforts was advocating for improved aviation facilities in Coimbatore, helping secure landing facilities for Boeing jet flights in the city rather than at Sulur, located about 35 kilometers away.
He also held leadership positions in several prominent organizations including:

- Southern India Mills Association
- Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Coimbatore)
- Engineering Export Promotion Council
Legacy and Commemoration
Shri G. Varadaraj passed away on 23 October 1990, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service in education, industry, and public life. His efforts helped shape institutions, empower communities, and foster economic development in Tamil Nadu.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp in his honor, celebrating the life and achievements of a visionary leader whose impact continues to inspire future generations.
