Commemorative Postage Stamps Celebrate India’s G20 Presidency and Leaders’ Summit 2023
The Group of Twenty (G20) is a premier forum for international economic cooperation, consisting of 19 countries — including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom, United States of America — along with the European Union.
Together, the G20 represents around 85% of the global GDP, over 75% of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world’s population.
The G20 plays a vital role in shaping global governance and advancing sustainable and balanced economic growth worldwide.
India’s Presidency of the G20
India assumed the G20 Presidency on December 1, 2022, holding it until November 30, 2023.
India’s G20 Presidency logo draws inspiration from the vibrant colours of the national flag and merges the image of the planet Earth with the lotus flower, India’s national symbol. This design reflects India’s pro-planet approach and harmony with nature.
Theme of India’s G20 Presidency
The theme – ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (One Earth · One Family · One Future) – is derived from the ancient Sanskrit text, the Maha Upanishads.
It emphasizes the interconnectedness of all life — human, animal, plant, and microorganisms — and promotes environmentally sustainable choices through the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) movement.
The theme urges the world to adopt responsible living practices that lead to global transformation toward a cleaner and greener future.
The G20 Commemorative Stamps
Stamp 1 – India’s Cultural Heritage and Unity
The first commemorative stamp highlights India’s rich cultural heritage and diversity.
- Featuring a golden design, it is inspired by the lotus flower and traditional Mandala art forms.
- The gold color symbolizes the richness of Indian culture, history, and timeless traditions.
- The seven petals represent the seven continents, symbolizing the collective coming together of G20 nations.
This stamp reflects how India’s philosophy of peaceful coexistence, cultural plurality, and democratic ethos can inspire the global community toward a shared, bright future.
Stamp 2 – Togetherness and Collective Leadership
The second stamp symbolizes the collective will of G20 countries to work together toward inclusive, ambitious, and action-oriented outcomes during India’s G20 Presidency.
- Inspired by the concept of ‘Unity in Diversity’ and ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, the design features seven hands reaching together, representing the seven continents.
- This symbolizes the values of unity, togetherness, and inclusivity, which are central to India’s vision for the G20.
A Message of Hope and Regeneration
India’s G20 Presidency comes at a critical time when the world faces multiple challenges.
Amidst these global issues, India’s role provides a beacon of hope — offering a platform for meaningful discussions to address contemporary problems and promote sustainability, interconnectedness, and inclusive global growth.
Through the issuance of these Commemorative Postage Stamps, the Department of Posts proudly marks India’s active and constructive role in global affairs and celebrates the spirit of multilateral cooperation at the G20 Leaders’ Summit, New Delhi 2023.
