India’s Contribution in the Gallipoli Campaign
The Gallipoli Campaign (1915–1916) was one of the most ambitious and challenging operations of the First World War. Its objective was to force the passage of the Dardanelles Strait, thereby opening a sea route to Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), compelling the surrender of Turkey, and bringing about a swift conclusion to the war in the Middle East.
Though limited in number, the Indian Expeditionary Force ‘G’ that served in the Dardanelles made a significant and memorable contribution to the course of the campaign. The participation of Indian troops added strength, courage, and discipline to a complex multinational operation that demanded supreme endurance under the most trying conditions.
Valour of the Indian Troops
The 14th Sikh Regiment and the 1/6th Gurkha Rifles earned a lasting place in history for their exceptional bravery and sacrifices.
At the Third Battle of Krithia, the 14th Sikhs fought valiantly despite overwhelming odds, sustaining heavy casualties yet displaying unmatched courage and resolve. Similarly, at the Battle of Sari Bair, the 1/6th Gurkhas demonstrated exemplary fighting spirit as they advanced through rugged terrain and fierce enemy resistance to secure their objectives.
Their acts of gallantry and dedication earned them admiration and respect from allies and foes alike, and their names continue to be remembered as symbols of Indian heroism on foreign soil.
Legacy and Remembrance
Though the Gallipoli Campaign did not achieve its intended military outcome, it remains one of the defining moments of the Great War—an enduring testament to the sacrifice and service of Indian soldiers who stood shoulder to shoulder with Allied forces in pursuit of global peace.
The participation of Indian troops in Gallipoli strengthened India’s reputation for bravery and professionalism in battle and laid the foundation for its recognition as a vital contributor to world military history.
A commemorative postage stamp has been issued to honour their service, courage, and sacrifice preserving forever the memory of India’s sons who fought with valour on the distant shores of Gallipoli.
