General K. S. Thimayya Stamp – Honouring a Legendary Military Leader
The Department of Posts proudly issued a commemorative postage stamp on General K. S. Thimayya, DSO, one of the most decorated and respected leaders in the history of the Indian Army. This stamp not only celebrates his extraordinary military career but also preserves his legacy as a source of inspiration for generations of Indians. Collectors of Indian Army Stamps and admirers of India’s military leaders regard this issue as a valuable tribute.
Early Life and Military Career
Born on 31 March 1906 in Madikeri, Coorg (Karnataka), Kodandera Subbayya Thimayya was commissioned into the Indian Army on 4 February 1926. He began his career with the 4th Battalion of the 19th Hyderabad Regiment (later 4 Kumaon). During the Second World War, he commanded the 8th Battalion of the same regiment in Burma, where his leadership brought victory in the Battle of Kangaw. For his outstanding service, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and a Mention-in-Dispatches. He also represented India at the Japanese surrenders in Singapore and the Philippines.
Role in Kashmir and Post-War Achievements
In 1948, General Thimayya commanded the 19 Infantry Division in Jammu & Kashmir, where he personally led a daring attack at Zoji La on 1 November 1948 with Stuart Light Tanks of the 7th Light Cavalry. His strategy resulted in the recapture of Dras, Kargil, and Leh, securing the Kashmir Valley for India.
Following these achievements, he served as the Commandant of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, and later as Quartermaster General. His international reputation grew when he was selected by the United Nations to head the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission in Korea, where his role was widely acclaimed. In 1954, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his distinguished services.
Chief of Army Staff and International Leadership
On 7 May 1957, General Thimayya became the sixth Chief of the Army Staff, leading the Indian Army until his retirement in 1961. Even after retirement, his expertise was sought globally. In July 1964, he was appointed as the Commander of the UN Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP), a role he served with great distinction until his untimely passing on 7 December 1965.
A Stamp that Celebrates Legacy
The General K. S. Thimayya Stamp honours his unparalleled service, both in India and on the international stage. His life embodies courage, leadership, and dedication, making this stamp a proud addition to the series of India Military Leaders Stamps. For philatelists and history enthusiasts alike, it is a timeless reminder of the man who shaped India’s military history.
