150 Years of Advancing Earth Sciences

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s geoscientific landscape over the past 150 years. Through its extensive research and exploration activities, GSI has built a robust national geoscience database that supports key sectors such as mineral and metal industries, power generation, agriculture, irrigation, infrastructure development, communication, and environmental management.

Expanding Geoscientific Exploration

The Geological Survey of India has extended its activities beyond land to include the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the seas surrounding India, as well as the icy continent of Antarctica. Remarkably, more than 87% of India’s EEZ has been covered through reconnaissance seabed mapping.

GSI has also contributed significantly to:

  • Geotechnical investigations
  • Development of ports and harbours
  • Identification of offshore structures

Training and Global Collaboration

Through the GSI Training Institute in Hyderabad, the organization provides specialized training in various geoscientific fields. This training benefits not only GSI professionals but also earth scientists from other national and international organizations, including those from ESCAP and various foreign countries.

GSI actively engages in international cooperation through bilateral exchange and collaborative programs, strengthening global geoscientific knowledge sharing.

Role in Sustainable Development

As the world adapts to changing economic and environmental challenges, the Geological Survey of India is preparing to meet the demands of the 21st century. By continuously upgrading its knowledge base and modernizing its tools and techniques, GSI contributes to India’s pursuit of sustainable development.

Mineral Exploration and National Wealth

Over the years, GSI has been instrumental in exploring and identifying key mineral resources in India. The commemorative stamp highlights three important ore-forming minerals:

  • Bauxite – a primary source of aluminium
  • Chalcopyrite – a major copper ore
  • Psilomelane – an important manganese ore

GSI’s efforts have led to the establishment of substantial reserves of these and many other minerals, contributing significantly to the country’s economic growth.

Stamp Design and Commemoration

The First Day Cover of the commemorative stamp illustrates GSI’s integrated survey methods across land, air, and sea. The stamp itself features the mineral ores—Bauxite, Chalcopyrite, and Psilomelane—symbolizing India’s rich natural resources and GSI’s contribution to national wealth.

To mark this milestone, the Department of Posts issued a special postage stamp celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Geological Survey of India, honoring its enduring legacy in advancing earth sciences.
