Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao, popularly known as Ghantasala, was one of the most celebrated playback singers in the history of the Indian film industry. A gifted vocalist and accomplished composer, he left an enduring legacy through his melodious voice and remarkable musical contributions.
Early Life and Struggles
Ghantasala was born in Chowtapalli, in Andhra Pradesh. He lost his father, a musician, at the young age of eleven. Despite facing hardships, he remained determined to pursue music. Living a life of struggle—often surviving on alms and staying in temples and inns—he continued his education at the Music College in Vizianagaram, where he gained recognition for his mastery over Carnatic Music.
Participation in Freedom Movement
In 1942, at the age of twenty, Ghantasala actively participated in the Quit India Movement. For his involvement, he was sentenced to 18 months of rigorous imprisonment. After his release, his life took a decisive turn when he met Samudrala Raghavacharya, who introduced him to the world of cinema.
Rise in Film Industry
Ghantasala got his first break as an independent singer in 1947, and by 1948, he had begun working as a music composer. From then on, his career soared to great heights. Over the years, he sang approximately 9,600 songs and worked as a music director for 102 films, composing nearly 2,000 songs.
Musical Style and Contributions
Ghantasala’s greatness lay not just in the number of songs he rendered, but in the trends he established. As a singer, he inspired generations with his distinctive style. As a composer, he skillfully blended classical ragas with popular film music, creating timeless melodies.

Other Contributions

His immense contribution to music earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri from the President of India. He was also honoured as the Singer Laureate by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, a highly respected recognition.
Commemoration
To honour his extraordinary legacy, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp dedicated to Ghantasala, whose voice continues to enchant millions.
