Introduction
Govindrao Pansare was a courageous martyr who sacrificed his life for the freedom of his motherland. He played a significant role in the popular movement against the autocratic rule in the Hyderabad State during the final years of the freedom struggle.
Early Life
Govindrao Pansare was born in 1913 in Badnapur, located in the Aurangabad District of India. He lost his parents at a young age and was brought up by his maternal uncle.
Although he was an intelligent student and later obtained a professional diploma, he chose not to pursue a career merely for earning a livelihood. Instead, he dedicated his life to the service of the nation and the welfare of the people.
Inspiration and Political Awakening
Pansare’s decision to serve the country was strongly influenced by his participation as a volunteer at the Haripura Session of the Indian National Congress. He was also inspired by the ideas and leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and Subhas Chandra Bose, whose dedication to India’s freedom deeply motivated him.
Social and Organisational Work
When his maternal uncle was transferred as a Station Master to Dharmabad, Govindrao shifted his activities to that town. He proved to be an exceptional organiser and helped establish several social and cultural institutions, including:
- Dharmavat Vachanalaya (a public library)
- Sarvonnati Kalamandir
- Pavitra Dugdhalaya
- Associations of farmers, porters, traders and women
Through these organisations, he spread the spirit of nationalism among ordinary people.
Political Activities
Govindrao Pansare was actively associated with the Indian National Congress and the Maharashtra Parishad. He successfully enrolled nearly 6,000 primary members for the Congress in his region.
He also promoted the use of Khadi, encouraging local people to adopt it as a symbol of self-reliance and resistance to colonial influence.
A man of strong principles and courage, Pansare fearlessly opposed injustice and corruption. He lodged several complaints with higher authorities against tyrannical and corrupt officials of the Hyderabad State administration.
Martyrdom
His activism and outspoken criticism of government officials led to his arrest on charges of delivering inflammatory speeches against the authorities. After being released on bail, Govindrao Pansare was travelling from Biloli to Dharmabad when he was attacked by a group of hostile militants and brutally killed.
His death turned him into a martyr of the struggle against oppression in Hyderabad State.
Commemoration
To honour the courage, dedication and sacrifice of Govindrao Pansare, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp celebrating his life and contribution to the freedom movement.
Conclusion
Govindrao Pansare’s life stands as a powerful example of patriotism, social commitment and fearless resistance against injustice. His efforts to awaken nationalism among common people and his ultimate sacrifice continue to inspire generations
