Founded in the mid-18th century by Baba Ala as a military stronghold, Patiala grew around Qila Mubarak, which served as the nucleus of the city’s development. Unlike many other forts in Punjab that belong to the Mughal or pre-Mughal periods, Qila Mubarak is regarded as one of the only Sikh forts of its kind in this part of the state.

Architectural Significance of Qila Mubarak

Qila Mubarak Patiala is a planned and symmetrical complex that beautifully synthesizes late Mughal and Rajasthani architectural styles. Elements of colonial design, especially visible in the roofing, reflect later additions and architectural evolution.

The inner section, known as the Androon, is a single interconnected building, though traditionally described as a collection of palaces. The complex consists of rooms grouped around courtyards, each with a distinct name and function, including:
