The Moon Lake of Himachal Pradesh
Chandra tal Lake, often called the “Moon Lake,” is one of the most stunning high-altitude lakes in the Himalayas. Located in the Lahaul and Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh, the lake serves as a natural link between the areas of Spiti and Lahaul and is renowned for its breathtaking beauty.
Surrounded by snow-covered peaks and vast stretches of rocky scree, Chandratal Lake displays a mesmerizing deep blue color. The lake has a circumference of about 2.5 kilometers and is the source of the Chandra River. Situated at an altitude of approximately 4,300 meters above sea level, the lake offers a dramatic landscape typical of the high Himalayan region.
Geologists believe that Chandratal Lake was formed at the end of the last Last Ice Age, when retreating glaciers left behind large masses of dead ice that later melted to form lakes.
Chandratal also holds an important place in Indian mythology. According to legend, it is believed that Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata, ascended to heaven from this very spot in the chariot of Indra.
Philatelic Tribute
Recognizing the scenic beauty and ecological importance of such high-altitude lakes, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp celebrating the Himalayan Lakes of India, featuring Chandratal Lake as one of these magnificent natural wonders.
