A Sacred Himalayan Lake in Sikkim

Tsomgo Lake, popularly known as Tsangu Lake, is one of the most picturesque high-altitude lakes in the eastern Himalayas. Located along the Nathu La highway near Gangtok, the lake lies at an altitude of about 12,310 feet above sea level and is surrounded by majestic alpine landscapes.

The name “Tsangu” comes from the Bhutia language, meaning “the source.” This tranquil lake is approximately 1 kilometer long, oval in shape, and about 15 meters deep. Its cool, clear waters beautifully reflect the surrounding snow-clad mountains and lush alpine forests, creating a breathtaking natural setting.

Tsangu Lake is also considered sacred by the local people, who regard it as an important natural and spiritual landmark in the region. The surrounding forests and mountain slopes provide habitat for rare wildlife species, including the endangered Red Panda and several migratory and native birds such as the Ruddy Shelduck.

To celebrate these natural treasures, the India Post issued commemorative postage stamp highlighting the beauty and importance of the Himalayan lakes of India, including Tsangu Lake.
