Freedom Fighter and Social Justice Martyr

Immanuel Sekaran was born on 9 October 1924 in Sellur village, Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu, to Shri Vedhanayagam and Smt. Gnanasoundhari. From an early age, he displayed courage and commitment to national and social causes.

Participation in the Freedom Struggle

While studying at Schwartz Higher Secondary School in Ramanathapuram, Immanuel Sekaranar became actively involved in India’s freedom movement. In 1942, during the historic Quit India Movement, he dedicated himself to the struggle against British rule.

At just 18 years of age, he was imprisoned for three months for participating in demonstrations against the British Government. His early sacrifice reflected his deep patriotism and determination.

Service in the Indian Army

After completing his studies in 1945, Immanuel Sekaranar joined the Indian Army, where he served as a Havaldar Major. His disciplined service in the armed forces further demonstrated his commitment to the nation.

Martyrdom and Legacy

In 1957, Ramanathapuram District witnessed intense caste-based tensions and political conflicts, particularly between Dalit communities and higher caste groups. Amidst this atmosphere of unrest and violence, Immanuel Sekaranar emerged as a prominent leader advocating equality and justice.

Tragically, he was murdered on 11 September 1957 at the young age of 33. His untimely death turned him into a symbol of resistance against social oppression and a martyr for social justice in Tamil Nadu.

Commemorative Stamp

In recognition of his courage, sacrifice, and contribution to the struggle for equality and justice, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp in honour of Immanuel Sekaranar, preserving his memory for future generations.
