Themes

The Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Temple at Ayodhya is a monument of profound geographical, historical, cultural, and spiritual significance. Situated on the sacred banks of the Saryu River, Ayodhya is regarded as the very embodiment of Shri Ram. It is here that the divine episodes of his childhood unfolded, shaping him into Maryada Purushottam, the epitome of virtue and dharma.

The temple symbolizes the united faith of every Indian in the life and teachings of Shri Ram. Its sculptures, spiritual motifs, and exquisite architectural style reflect the divinity of Rama and embody a renaissance of India’s eternal spiritual energy.

Shri Ram as Dharma Incarnate

In Indian philosophy, Dharma denotes morality, ethics, and the sustaining force of civilization. Shri Ram is revered as Dharmavigraha—the embodiment of Dharma. His life reflected the ten virtues of dharma: patience, forgiveness, purity, wisdom, truth, selflessness, restraint, compassion, and mercy. Ancient sages like Valmiki and Ved Vyas affirmed that Shri Ram’s incarnation was not merely to destroy evil but to guide humanity in righteous living. His ideals continue to hold deep relevance for modern society.

Architectural Grandeur

The temple, under construction by the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust (established by the Supreme Court in 2019), spans a 70-acre complex. Designed in the traditional Nagara style of architecture, it is built entirely with 26,500 Pink Bansi Paharpur stones from Rajasthan, ensuring longevity for over a thousand years without steel reinforcement.

Key highlights include:

  • Dimensions: 161.75 feet high, 380 feet long, 249.5 feet wide
  • Five Mandaps: Nritya Mandap, Rang Mandap, Gudh Mandap, Kirtan Mandap, and Prarthana Mandap
  • Three floors with 166, 142, and 82 intricately carved pillars respectively, each adorned with over 10,000 moortis and themes
  • 46 teakwood doors, 14 of which are embellished with gold plating
  • 80,000 sq. ft. marble flooring with intricate inlay work
  • Structural resilience against seismic activity of Zone 4

A unique feature is the Surya Tilak mechanism, designed by CBRI Roorkee, ensuring that on Ram Navami, the Sun’s rays will fall directly on Shri Ram’s forehead.

A Historic Pran Pratishtha

The Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Shri Ram Lalla marked a historic and spiritual milestone for Bharat. To commemorate this moment, the Department of Posts issues a Miniature Sheet of six postage stamps on Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Temple.

These stamps are imbued with sanctity, printed using water and sand from Ram Janmbhoomi, carrying the fragrance of sandalwood and enhanced with gold foiling, radiating the divine aura of Shri Ram.

A National Treasure

The Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Temple stands as a timeless beacon of faith, unity, and dharma. It is not only a marvel of architecture but also a symbol of the eternal values that guide humanity. The Department of Posts invites every being to seek the blessings of Shri Ram for a life of virtue, devotion, and meaning.
