Since ancient times, fairs and festivals have served as vibrant hubs for trade and commerce in our country. Today, trade fairs hold significant economic importance, not only facilitating trade and marketing of goods but also providing platforms for the exchange of technical know-how and consultancy services. They are pivotal windows for showcasing the industrial and economic prowess of the nation.
Recognizing the pivotal role of trade fairs in promoting export, the Trade Fair Authority of India (TFAI) was established by the Government of India on December 30, 1976. TFAI serves as the single unified national agency responsible for planning and organizing exhibitions and fairs both within India and abroad, with the primary objective of promoting exports.
In its short existence, TFAI has achieved remarkable milestones. Domestically, it has organized major expositions such as the National Handloom Fair, Agri-Expo 77, and the National Small Industries Fair. Internationally, the Indian National Exhibition in Moscow in August 1978 marked India’s largest fair on foreign soil, significantly enhancing trade relations with the USSR. TFAI has also participated in numerous international trade fairs abroad, showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage and economic potential through events like “Indian Promotion Weeks,” fashion shows, and culinary showcases.
The India International Trade Fair 1979, held at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, represents a significant milestone as the first International Trade Fair organized by TFAI in India. With the theme “Trade for Prosperity,” the fair encompasses all facets of industry, agriculture, trade, science, and technology. Participation includes nearly 30 countries from around the world, along with various state governments, central ministries, public undertakings, export promotion councils, commodity boards, and private firms.
In commemoration of the India International Trade Fair 1979, the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department is pleased to issue a special postage stamp, celebrating the importance of trade and commerce in fostering economic prosperity and global partnerships.
