Significance of the Festival

Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals in India. It symbolizes the victory of righteousness over evil and the triumph of light over darkness. The word Deepavali literally means “rows of lamps”, highlighting the central theme of illumination, hope and renewal.

Time of Celebration

Deepavali is celebrated on the new moon day in the month of Kartik as per the Indian lunar calendar, which usually falls in late October or early November. The festival is observed with great enthusiasm across the country.

Mythological Background

Deepavali commemorates the return of Lord Rama, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, to Ayodhya after a fourteen-year exile and the defeat of the demon king Ravana. In celebration of their king’s return, the people of Ayodhya illuminated the city with earthen lamps (diyas).

Rituals and Celebrations

The festival is marked by cleaning and decorating homes, lighting diyas and candles, and illuminating shops, business establishments and marketplaces. People greet friends and relatives, exchange sweets, and participate in festive gatherings. Bursting firecrackers is also a traditional part of the celebration.

Symbolism of Light

The lighting of diyas during Deepavali signifies the dispelling of darkness and ignorance, the spread of knowledge, and the triumph of good over evil. The festival conveys a message of peace, prosperity and harmony.

Commemorative Postage Stamp

To celebrate the spirit and cultural significance of Deepavali, the Department of Posts issued a Commemorative Postage Stamp depicting the Festival of Lights. The stamp highlights the symbolism of illuminated diyas and reflects the universal values of hope, justice and the victory of good over evil, reinforcing the cultural bonds shared by people across communities and nations.
