Maldivian Vadhu Dhoni Boat

The Vadhu Dhoni is a traditional Maldivian fishing boat that stands as a powerful symbol of the Maldives’ intimate relationship with the ocean. For centuries, island life in the Maldives has revolved around the sea, and the Vadhu Dhoni reflects this deep-rooted maritime culture, shaped by generations of fishermen, craftsmen, and seafarers.

Traditionally handcrafted from wood by local artisans, the Vadhu Dhoni is designed with a narrow, elongated hull, allowing it to glide smoothly through lagoons, reefs, and open coastal waters. This form is especially suited to the Maldives’ coral-rich environment, enabling safe navigation in shallow and confined waters. Historically sail-powered, many Vadhu Dhonis today are fitted with inboard motors, while still retaining elements of their original sailing heritage.

The Vadhu Dhoni has been widely used for reef and coastal fishing, particularly for handline fishing, which remains an important livelihood for Maldivian communities. Beyond its functional role, the boat represents a way of life—one rooted in respect for the sea, sustainable practices, and communal knowledge passed down through generations.

Commemorative Postage Stamp on India–Maldives Partnership

Recognising this enduring heritage, the Department of Posts has released a Commemorative Postage Stamp featuring the Maldivian Vadhu Dhoni alongside India’s traditional Uru boat. This stamp pays tribute to the timeless maritime bond between India and the Maldives and celebrates the Vadhu Dhoni as a proud emblem of Maldivian craftsmanship, resilience, and oceanic tradition.
