India’s Maritime Mastercraft from Beypore
The Uru is a magnificent traditional wooden boat of India, deeply rooted in the country’s maritime history and craftsmanship. Built for centuries in the historic shipbuilding yards of Beypore, Kerala, the Uru—often referred to as the “fat boat”—is a large wooden dhow that once played a vital role in the Indian Ocean trade network.
Traditionally constructed from high-quality teak wood, Urus are renowned for their strength, durability, and elegant form. What makes Uru-building especially remarkable is its purely artisanal process: these vessels are crafted entirely by skilled craftsmen without the use of blueprints or written manuals. Knowledge of construction is passed orally and through practice from one generation to the next, preserving an ancient living tradition of Indian shipbuilding.
Historically, Urus were used by Arab and Indian merchants to transport goods across the Indian Ocean, connecting the Indian subcontinent with the Middle East, East Africa, and island nations such as the Maldives. These boats thus became carriers not only of trade but also of ideas, cultures, and civilisational exchange.
Even in modern times, Uru-building continues in Beypore, with vessels adapted for contemporary needs such as luxury yachts and heritage crafts, while retaining their traditional character. The Uru stands today as a symbol of India’s rich maritime heritage, craftsmanship, and long-standing commercial and cultural links across the seas.
