Lotus
National Flower of India
The Lotus, the national flower of India, is a timeless symbol of purity, resilience, and spiritual enlightenment. Rising unsullied from muddy waters, the lotus represents the triumph of virtue over adversity and has been revered in Indian philosophy, religion, and art for thousands of years. It is closely associated with divinity and wisdom, appearing prominently in Hinduism and Buddhism, where deities are often depicted seated on or holding a lotus.
Beyond its spiritual significance, the lotus embodies India’s cultural ethos and civilisational continuity. It signifies harmony, hope, and renewal, values that resonate deeply within Indian society. The flower has also inspired classical literature, sculpture, painting, and architecture, making it one of the most enduring motifs in India’s artistic traditions.
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and the Philippines, the lotus has been featured alongside the Sampaguita, the national flower of the Philippines, in a joint commemorative postage stamp issue. The pairing of these two national flowers symbolises the enduring friendship, shared values, and close cultural connections between the two nations, highlighting mutual respect and cooperation.
Philatelic Tribute
The Department of Posts is proud to release this joint issue of commemorative postage stamps, celebrating not only a significant diplomatic milestone but also India Post’s tradition of honouring international partnerships through meaningful philatelic expressions. The lotus depicted on the stamp stands as a powerful emblem of India’s cultural identity and its warm, enduring ties with the Philippines.
