India-Vietnam have shared a deep and enduring bond throughout history, rooted in their common struggle against colonialism and their shared cultural heritage. Mahatma Gandhi and President Ho Chi Minh, revered as the Father of the Nation in their respective countries, led their people with courage and determination in the fight for independence.

Since establishing full diplomatic relations in 1972, India and Vietnam have continuously strengthened their bilateral ties, culminating in the elevation of their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2016. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the two countries have pursued a Joint Vision for Peace, Prosperity, and People, paving the way for deeper cooperation in various sectors.

The celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2022-23, coinciding with India’s 75th anniversary of independence, underscores the enduring friendship between the two nations. India’s development partnership with Vietnam, manifested through capacity building initiatives, sustainable development goals, and community infrastructure projects, has contributed significantly to Vietnam’s socio-economic progress.

Cultural exchanges between India and Vietnam, including the restoration of historical sites and the promotion of yoga, further strengthen the people-to-people ties. The launch of direct flights and simplified visa regimes has facilitated greater interaction for leisure, business, and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

In the realm of sports, both nations share a passion for martial arts. Kalaripayattu, the ancient martial art form of Kerala, and Vovinam, founded in Vietnam in 1936, showcase the rich martial traditions of India and Vietnam. A Joint Postage Stamp featuring Kalaripayattu and Vovinam not only promotes their national identities but also celebrates the strong cultural, social, and political links between India and Vietnam.

The issuance of a Souvenir Sheet commemorating 50 years of diplomatic relations further underscores the commitment of both countries to strengthen bilateral ties and foster greater cooperation in the years to come. The Department of Posts is proud to facilitate this celebration, which serves to deepen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between India and Vietnam.
