The Aircraft that Laid the Foundation of the Indian Air Force
The Westland Wapiti occupies a place of honour in the history of the Indian Air Force, as the aircraft that formed the nucleus of the service in its formative years. In April 1933, the Indian Air Force began operations with just four Westland Wapiti aircraft, marking the modest yet determined beginnings of what would later become one of the world’s most professional air forces.
Backbone of the Early Indian Air Force
During its early years, the Westland Wapiti served as a versatile and reliable aircraft, undertaking a wide range of operational roles. These included:
- Escort of military convoys
- Aerial reconnaissance missions
- Operations in the North-West Frontier Province
- Anti-bombing and anti-submarine duties
Despite its limited technology by modern standards, the Wapiti played a crucial role in establishing aerial operations and training early generations of Indian Air Force personnel.
Symbol of Humble Beginnings and Enduring Legacy
The Westland Wapiti represents the humble origins of the Indian Air Force—an era defined by courage, adaptability, and determination rather than numbers or advanced technology. The aircraft helped lay the foundation of air power in India and contributed significantly to the development of military aviation doctrine in the country.
The sole surviving Westland Wapiti is carefully preserved at the Air Force Museum, Palam, serving as a living reminder of the Indian Air Force’s early struggles and achievements.
Commemorative Postage Stamp – Westland Wapiti
In recognition of its historic importance, the Westland Wapiti is featured on one of the four commemorative postage stamps issued to mark the Platinum Jubilee of the Indian Air Force. Released by the Department of Posts, the stamp pays tribute to the aircraft that symbolised the birth of the Indian Air Force and the enduring spirit of those who served in its early years.
