Protecting India’s Maritime Frontiers

The United Nations Third Conference on the Law of the Sea in 1973 underscored the urgent need to protect life and property at sea, enforce national jurisdiction in maritime zones, and create awareness about the dangers posed to ocean resources by pollution. Responding to these global concerns, the Government of India established the Indian Coast Guard on 1 February 1977 as an Armed Force of the Union under the Ministry of Defence.

The Indian Coast Guard functions primarily as a maritime law enforcement agency, entrusted with safeguarding India’s vast maritime interests and ensuring safety in its territorial and exclusive economic waters.

Mandate and Responsibilities

The broad charter of duties of the Indian Coast Guard includes:

  • Protection of fishermen and assistance during distress at sea.
  • Preservation and protection of the marine environment.
  • Safety and security of offshore installations and artificial islands.
  • Prevention and control of marine pollution.
  • Conduct of anti-smuggling and anti-piracy operations.
  • Ensuring safety of life and property at sea.

To fulfil these responsibilities, the Coast Guard maintains vigilant surveillance through a coordinated network of shore installations, seafaring vessels, and aircraft. With ships deployed on patrol across most parts of India’s waters, the force remains prepared round the clock, throughout the year, to respond swiftly to any maritime emergency.

Air Capabilities

The aerial strength of the Indian Coast Guard plays a vital role in surveillance and rescue missions. Commemorative stamps issued in its honour depict the Dornier Fixed Wing Aircraft and the Advanced Light Helicopter.

The Dornier aircraft has been instrumental in locating vessels in distress, intercepting suspected pirates, and detecting ships carrying contraband. The Advanced Light Helicopter, along with the Chetak helicopter, is highly suited for search and rescue operations at sea and also serves as a crucial communication link during maritime missions.

Surface Capabilities

The maritime strength of the Coast Guard is further highlighted through stamps portraying a Hovercraft and an Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel.

The Hovercraft, being amphibious, is capable of operating both in shallow coastal waters and deeper seas, making it highly versatile for near-shore and open-sea operations. Offshore Patrol Vessels form the backbone of the Coast Guard fleet. Well-armed and robust, these vessels are equipped to handle diverse maritime challenges and emergencies.

Miniature sheet

In recognition of its dedicated and sterling service to the nation, India Post issued a set of four commemorative postage stamps along with a Miniature sheet on the 30th Anniversary of the Indian Coast Guard.

The stamps beautifully depict the synergy between India’s maritime waters and the Coast Guard’s air and surface capabilities. The miniature sheet, comprising four commemorative stamps, honours the Indian Coast Guard as a vigilant armed force committed to protecting India’s maritime interests and ensuring safety, security, and environmental preservation at sea.
