India’s Tradition of Educational Excellence
The character of a nation is deeply reflected in the strength and integrity of its educational institutions. From ancient times, India has nurtured institutions that aimed not only to produce scholars but also to shape responsible and enlightened individuals.
Ancient centres of learning such as Takshashila University and Nalanda University produced great luminaries like Panini, Chanakya, and Charaka. These institutions provided education in subjects such as grammar, logic, philosophy, astronomy, and medicine, while maintaining rigorous academic standards and promoting intellectual excellence.
Modern educational institutions in India continue this tradition by striving to deliver quality education and contribute positively to society. One such institution is the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management.
Establishment of IISWBM
The Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM) was established following a resolution adopted by the Syndicate of University of Calcutta on 25 April 1953. In July 1954, the Institute introduced the country’s first University Post Graduate Diploma course in Business Management, marking a significant milestone in management education in India.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) had earlier constituted a committee in 1948 to examine the need for training in industrial administration and business management. A sub-committee led by Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata—commonly referred to in this context as the Ghandy Committee—recommended IISWBM as a suitable centre for business management training.
Initially established as the All India Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, it was registered as a society in 1958 under its present name. This step enabled the Institute to be managed by an autonomous council and receive financial support from the Government of India until 1991. Since then, the Government of West Bengal has assumed responsibility for supporting the institution.
Campus and Administration
The Institute campus consists of two main buildings—the Administrative Block and the Academic Block—with a combined floor area of 1235.41 square metres. The foundation stone of the Academic Block was laid on 30 November 1958 by Jawaharlal Nehru.
Since 1958, IISWBM has been governed by a Board of Governors comprising representatives from the University of Calcutta, the Government of West Bengal, the Ministry of Education India, the AICTE, and major chambers of commerce.
Academic Programmes
The Institute offers several prestigious academic programmes. The most prominent among them is the Masters in Business Management (MBM) programme affiliated with the University of Calcutta.
Additional courses introduced over the years include:
- Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) – started in 1990

All these programmes are approved by the AICTE, the statutory body under the Government of India responsible for technical education.
