A Century of Promoting Trade and Industry

Established in 1907, the Indian Merchants’ Chamber (IMC) is one of the oldest and most influential chambers of commerce in western India. Over the decades, it has played a vital role in promoting trade, industry, and economic development, while serving as a catalyst for innovation and policy dialogue.

Origins and Role in the Swadeshi Movement

The Chamber was founded at a time when India was experiencing intense political and economic transformation. Its founders sought to promote Indian enterprise and reduce the dominance of foreign control over the country’s trade and commerce.

During the height of the Swadeshi Movement, the Indian Merchants’ Chamber actively supported indigenous industry and trade. In recognition of its significant role, Mahatma Gandhi accepted Honorary Membership of the Chamber, making IMC the only chamber of commerce in India to receive this distinction.

Membership and Activities

Today, the Indian Merchants’ Chamber represents a vast network of more than 250,000 members, including large, medium, and small-scale enterprises. Its membership includes manufacturing units, trading organizations, professionals, and service providers.

The Chamber represents a broad spectrum of economic activities, including:

  • Banking and finance
  • Tourism and hospitality
  • Taxation and management consultancy
  • Telecommunications and information technology
  • Trade and manufacturing

As a non-profit organization, IMC provides a platform where representatives of industry, commerce, and government can exchange ideas and collaborate. Through its initiatives and policy recommendations, the Chamber has contributed significantly to shaping government policies affecting trade and business.

Innovation and Institutional Growth

The Indian Merchants’ Chamber has consistently embraced modernization and technological progress. It became the first chamber of commerce in India to receive ISO 9002 certification, later upgraded to ISO 9001:2000, reflecting its commitment to high standards in organizational management.

Apart from its headquarters in Mumbai, the Chamber operates a branch office in Navi Mumbai and a regional office in New Delhi. It also runs the Economic Research and Training Foundation, which functions as a think tank for research, training, and policy analysis related to trade and industry.

International Engagement and Global Outreach

IMC has been actively involved in promoting Indian business globally and projecting India as a destination for investment and trade opportunities. The Chamber has signed over 75 Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with leading chambers of commerce from around 60 countries.

It maintains close associations with organizations such as the International Chamber of Commerce and the International Fiscal Association.

The Chamber has also organized major international events, including the “India Calling” Overseas Indian Conference at the Asia Pacific Business Summit in Singapore in 2004 and the India–Gulf Partnership Summit in Dubai in 2005.

Strengthening its global presence, IMC established overseas offices in Dubai and Singapore to promote India’s trade and investment interests.

Commemorative Stamp

To mark the centenary of the Indian Merchants’ Chamber, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp, celebrating 100 years of the Chamber’s service to India’s trade, industry, and economic development.

The stamp honors the institution’s long-standing commitment to fostering business growth, encouraging entrepreneurship, and strengthening India’s presence in the global economy.
