Honouring India’s Unsung Heroes of the First World War
The First World War (1914–1918) was a watershed in world history, transforming global geopolitics and redefining nations. Though under colonial rule at the time, India’s contribution to the war effort was extraordinary. Over 1.4 million Indian soldiers served overseas, displaying unmatched courage and fortitude in distant lands—from Mesopotamia and Gallipoli to France and Belgium. Their valour came at a heavy price—approximately 74,000 soldiers laid down their lives. In recognition of their gallantry, Indian troops received over 9,200 decorations, including 11 Victoria Crosses.
The Indian Military Memorial at Villers-Guislain
To honour the supreme sacrifice of these brave soldiers, the Indian Military Memorial at Villers-Guislain, France, stands as a lasting tribute to their courage and service. Unveiled on 10 November 2018 by the Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, the memorial commemorates the men of the Indian Armed Forces who fought and fell on the Western Front during the Great War.
Situated near the historic battlefield where Lance Dafadar Gobind Singh won his Victoria Cross for exceptional bravery on 1 December 1917, the memorial serves as a symbol of India’s enduring commitment to peace and the universal values of humanity and sacrifice.
Legacy of Courage
During the war, Indian troops played a decisive role in the major European battle theatres—most notably in France and Belgium, where the Indian Expeditionary Force “A” fought valiantly in Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, and Loos. Their presence was immortalised at memorials such as Neuve Chapelle and Menin Gate, and today, the Villers-Guislain memorial continues that legacy, uniting history, honour, and heritage.
Commemoration in Philately
A commemorative postage stamp celebrates the Indian Military Memorial at Villers-Guislain—a solemn reminder of India’s global role in shaping the modern world through courage and sacrifice. The stamp embodies the nation’s deep respect for its soldiers who fought in distant lands and ensured their memory endures for generations to come.
