Introduction
Damal Krishnaswamy Pattammal, popularly known as D. K. Pattammal, was one of the most revered and pioneering voices of Carnatic music. Celebrated for her profound knowledge, uncompromising classicism and powerful vocal expression, she was among the legendary female Trinity of Carnatic music. Her life and achievements remain an inspiration to generations of musicians.
Early Life
D. K. Pattammal was born on 28th March, 1919, in Damal, a small village near Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. Displaying extraordinary musical talent from an early age, Pattammal began rigorous training at the tender age of four. By her teenage years, she had already become recognized for her exceptional singing ability.
She created history by becoming the first Brahmin woman to sing on stage, breaking long-standing social barriers and opening doors for many women to enter the field of classical performance.
Musical Journey
The defining moment of Pattammal’s career came when she courageously ventured into rendering Ragam–Tanam–Pallavi (RTP)—a domain then considered exclusive to male performers. Her mastery over its complex rhythmic and melodic structures earned her the title “Pallavi Pattammal”.
Over a career spanning 75 years, she:
