In April 1956, the Government of India approved the creation of a Naval Aviation wing for the Indian Navy and acquired the aircraft carrier HMS Hercules along with two squadrons of Hawker Seahawk aircraft for its air wing. On 07 July 1960, Indian Naval Air Squadron 300 (INAS-300) was commissioned at the Royal Navy Air Station, Brawdy, under the command of Lt Cdr B. R. Acharya. The squadron adopted the proud crest of the “White Tiger of Rewa,” symbolizing strength and agility.
INS Vikrant and the 1971 War
HMS Hercules was later commissioned into the Indian Navy as INS Vikrant. During the 1971 Indo-Pak conflict, INS Vikrant, with 18 aircraft of the White Tiger squadron embarked, played a decisive role in the eastern theatre. The squadron inflicted heavy losses on enemy targets, earning distinction and numerous gallantry awards, including one Maha Vir Chakra, five Vir Chakras, one Nao Sena Medal, and four Mentions in Despatches.
The dependable Seahawk aircraft, which had formed the backbone of Indian Naval Aviation, were finally phased out and disembarked from INS Vikrant on 08 May 1978. They were replaced by the advanced Sea Harrier jets.
The Era of Sea Harriers
The re-born White Tigers evolved into a highly professional combat unit with the induction of Sea Harriers. The squadron excelled in embarkations, joint exercises, Dissimilar Aircraft Combat Training, and air-to-air gunnery exercises. Participation in multinational naval exercises further enhanced its operational experience, bringing Indian Naval Aviation face-to-face with leading naval air forces from the United States, France, and the United Kingdom.
With evolving technology, the Sea Harriers were upgraded under the Limited Upgrade Sea Harrier (LUSH) programme, equipping them with Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles and enhanced combat capabilities. These upgrades significantly strengthened the firepower and operational readiness of INAS-300.
Legacy of the White Tigers
Operating often with modest resources yet delivering extraordinary results, the White Tigers of INAS-300 have built an enviable reputation within Indian Naval Aviation. Their courage, professionalism, and operational excellence have ensured that they remain at the forefront of maritime air power.
Commemorative Stamp
To mark 50 glorious years of service (1960–2010), India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp honouring Indian Naval Air Squadron 300. The stamp celebrates the squadron’s distinguished legacy, its contribution to national defence, and its enduring motto of excellence in naval aviation.
