India’s Leading Petroleum and Energy Company
History often unfolds through events that seem modest at first but later shape the destiny of nations. One such milestone occurred on 30th June 1959, when Indian Oil Company Ltd. was established as a small oil marketing enterprise in a two-room tenement. What began as a humble venture would grow into Indian Oil Corporation Limited, India’s largest commercial enterprise and a global energy giant.
In 1964, following the merger with Indian Refineries Ltd. (established in August 1958), the company was renamed Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL). The newly integrated entity was entrusted with a critical national mandate — achieving self-sufficiency in petroleum refining and marketing for India.
From Modest Beginnings to Global Recognition
In 1965, Indian Oil had a net worth of just ₹45.18 crore and sales of 1.38 million tonnes valued at ₹78 crore. Over the decades, the company witnessed phenomenal growth. By 2008–09, Indian Oil recorded a sales turnover of ₹285,337 crore, earning the distinction of being India’s largest commercial enterprise.
Today, Indian Oil Corporation Limited is the highest-ranked Indian company in the prestigious Fortune Global 500 list and ranks among the top petroleum companies worldwide.
Dominant Presence in India’s Energy Sector
The Indian Oil group plays a pivotal role in India’s petroleum industry:
- Nearly 50% share in India’s petroleum products market
- 34% of national refining capacity
- 71% of downstream sector pipeline capacity
Indian Oil owns and operates 10 out of India’s 20 refineries, with a combined refining capacity of 60.2 million tonnes per annum (MMTPA). Expansion projects have further strengthened its capacity and operational efficiency.
The company also manages India’s largest network of crude oil and product pipelines — spanning over 10,000 kilometres — ensuring efficient, economical, and environmentally responsible energy transportation across the country.
Extensive Retail and Distribution Network
As the national oil company in the downstream sector, Indian Oil touches millions of lives every day across diverse terrains and regions of India.
Its extensive network includes:
- Around 35,000 sales points
- Over 18,000 petrol and diesel stations
- Specially designed Kisan Seva Kendras serving rural communities
Indian Oil’s flagship LPG brand, Indane, supplies clean and convenient cooking gas to over 53 million households across nearly 2,700 markets. In the aviation sector, Indian Oil commands over 62% market share, catering to the Indian Air Force, domestic airlines, international carriers, and private operators.
Innovation and Research Excellence
Established in 1972, Indian Oil’s R&D Centre has evolved into a world-class research institution. It has pioneered advancements in:
- Lubricants formulation
- Refinery processes
- Pipeline technology
- Alternative fuels
The Centre is also the nodal agency for promoting hydrogen fuel technology in India’s hydrocarbon sector. With over 120 active patents, including several international patents, Indian Oil continues to drive innovation in the energy space.
People-Centric Growth and Leadership Development
Indian Oil’s strength lies in its 34,000-strong workforce. Guided by core values of care, innovation, passion, and trust, the company fosters an open work culture that encourages creativity, skill enhancement, and participative management.
Its apex learning institution, the Indian Oil Institute of Petroleum Management (IIPM), plays a crucial role in leadership development and talent nurturing through globally benchmarked training programmes. Many of its senior leaders have served in key positions within the oil and gas sector, reinforcing Indian Oil’s reputation for professionalism and expertise.
Golden Jubilee Commemoration
Marking fifty years of remarkable growth and nation-building, Indian Oil celebrated its Golden Jubilee as a symbol of resilience, innovation, and service to the nation. To honor this milestone, the Department of Posts released a commemorative postage stamp — recognizing Indian Oil Corporation Limited’s immense contribution to India’s energy security and economic progress.
