Themes

Temple architecture in India evolved over centuries, maintaining a conservative structural base while incorporating decorative details that varied across regions. These differences often reflected the locally available construction materials and the craftsmanship of regional artisans. The diversity of temple architecture in India represents the country’s rich cultural and spiritual traditions.

Vishal Badri Temple

The Badrinath Temple, also known as Vishal Badri, is dedicated to Vishnu and was established by Adi Shankaracharya. Located in the scenic Himalayan valley of Garhwal, the temple is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India. The nearby hot mineral spring of Badrinath is famous for its spiritual significance and reputed medicinal properties.

Mallikarjuna swamy Temple

The Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple at Srisailam is an important pilgrimage centre. It houses one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Shiva, along with one of the eighteen revered forms of Shakti in the same complex. Situated on the Nallamalai Hills near the Krishna River, the temple’s history dates back to the period of the Satavahana Dynasty, among the early rulers of Andhra.

Tripureswari Temple

The Tripura Sundari Temple, also known as the Tripureswari Temple, was built in 1501 AD by Dhanya Manikya at Udaipur. The temple is dedicated to Tripura Sundari, a manifestation of Mahashakti. Architecturally, it reflects the Stupa-Sirsa style, highlighting the patronage of temple architecture by the rulers of Tripura.

Jagannath Temple, Puri

The Jagannath Temple, dedicated to Jagannath, is one of the most famous temples in India. Construction began in the 12th century under Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva and was completed in the 13th century by Anangabhima Deva III. Located in Puri, the temple is known for its towering spire and the grandeur of the annual Ratha Yatra. The temple is a classic example of the rich Kalinga style of architecture.

Commemoration

To celebrate the diversity and heritage of temple architecture in India, India Post issued a set of commemorative postage stamps highlighting these remarkable temples. The stamps reflect the architectural beauty and spiritual significance of India’s historic temples.
