Indulal Kanaiyalal Yagnik (1892–1972) was a distinguished freedom fighter, social reformer, farmer leader, and one of the most influential political figures of Gujarat. He played a vital role in India’s freedom struggle and later became widely known for leading the Mahagujarat Movement for the creation of a separate Gujarat state.

To honor his remarkable contribution, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp on Indulal Yagnik as part of the “Freedom Fighters and Social Reformers” series.

Early Life of Indulal Yagnik

Indulal Kanaiyalal Yagnik was born in 1892 in Gujarat. From an early age, he was deeply influenced by the ideas of nationalism, social reform, and public service.

He dedicated his life to the upliftment of farmers, promotion of education, and the struggle for India’s independence.

Because of his close connection with the people, especially farmers and workers, Indulal Yagnik became one of the most respected public leaders in Gujarat.

Indulal Yagnik and the Freedom Struggle

Indulal Yagnik actively participated in the Indian freedom movement and worked tirelessly to spread the message of Swadeshi and the Non-Cooperation Movement.

He encouraged people to reject British goods and support Indian-made products. Through his speeches and campaigns, he inspired thousands to join the struggle against British rule.

In 1919, Indulal Yagnik joined the campaign against the Rowlatt Act, which was widely opposed across India because it restricted civil liberties.

During the same period, he also organized famine relief work in Gujarat to help people suffering from severe hardship.

Role in the Kaira Satyagraha

One of the most important episodes in Indulal Yagnik’s public life was his involvement in the Kaira Satyagraha.

The Kaira Satyagraha was launched to support farmers who were unable to pay land revenue because of crop failure and famine.

Indulal Yagnik played an active role in this movement. Along with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, he prepared an important famine report on Gujarat. This report highlighted the suffering of farmers and strengthened the demand for relief from the government.

His efforts made him a strong voice for peasants and rural communities.

Champion of Farmers and Cooperative Development

Indulal Yagnik believed that the future of India depended on the welfare of farmers. He spent much of his life organizing farmer movements and defending their rights.

He was closely associated with the All India Kisan Sabha and worked for better conditions for peasants.

Indulal Yagnik also supported the development of the cooperative sector. He believed that cooperative institutions could improve the economic condition of farmers and strengthen rural society.

His contribution to farmer movements earned him great respect among the people of Gujarat.

Contribution to Education and Social Reform

Propagation of education was one of the issues closest to Indulal Yagnik’s heart.

He believed that education was essential for social progress and national development. He worked to spread awareness and encourage learning among ordinary people.

As a social reformer, he wanted to build a more just and progressive society. He supported reforms that would improve the lives of farmers, workers, and the poor.

Indulal Yagnik and the Mahagujarat Movement

Indulal Yagnik is best remembered as the leader of the Mahagujarat Movement.

He strongly believed that Gujarat should become a separate state with its own identity, language, and culture. He campaigned for the formation of a separate Gujarat state for many years.

Under his leadership, the Mahagujarat Movement gained widespread support. Eventually, his dream became a reality when the state of Gujarat was created in 1960.

Because of his role in this movement, Indulal Yagnik is remembered as one of the architects of modern Gujarat.

Vision for Modern Industrial Development

Along with supporting farmers and rural communities, Indulal Yagnik also believed in the industrial development of India.

He advocated modern industries and believed that India should move forward through a balanced combination of agriculture, education, and industrial progress.

His vision was not limited to Gujarat alone. He wanted the entire country to become economically strong and self-reliant.

Since 1957, Indulal Yagnik represented the Ahmedabad constituency in the Lok Sabha.

He continued to serve as a Member of Parliament until his death in 1972. Throughout his parliamentary career, he remained committed to the welfare of farmers, workers, and ordinary citizens.
